About the Poet Dorotea Reyna
The first photograph I fell in love with in
Penni's collection was the one she took of the hacienda gate in
Sonoma. I was immediately soothed by the pinks and blues and greens
of her hand tinting, and pasted the image in my journal as a talisman
on the voyage of menopause. The strength and beauty of her image
encouraged me to embrace my first hot flashes and other cues that
my body was changing. I was delighted when we began to discuss a
collaboration in which I would write poetry to accompany each image.
My poetry has been published in New Chicana/Chicano
Writing, Vol. 1 (University of Arizona Press, 1992) and in Imagining
Worlds (McGraw-Hill, 1995). I have read my poetry at Dominican
University of California and at other Bay Area locations, and have
received artist's grants from the Marin Arts Council in poetry and
playwriting.
My play, "Goddesses," toured the Bay
Area in 2001. Written as a series of poetic monologs giving voice
to the Greek goddesses, the play won 1st Place for Best Direction
at the 7th Annual Festival of One-Act Plays at Dominican University
of California. An expanded version went on to be performed to enthusiastic
audiences at the Live Oak Theater in Berkeley and at Mills College.
"Goddesses" was performed live on Pacifica Radio, KPFABerkeley
94.1 FM, on the world drama program Act One in the summer of 2001.
I received a Bachelor of Arts in English from
Stanford University and a Master of Arts in English from the University
of Texas at Austin, and have taught creative writing at Texas A&I
University and at Dominican University. I am currently submitting
my bilingual book of poetry, "Reina de Copas," for publication.
